Dosto, UPSC Civil Services 2026 crack karne ke liye aapko 'Integrated Approach' apnani hogi. Iska matlab hai ki Prelims aur Mains ki taiyari saath-saath karein. Sirf facts ratne se kaam nahi chalega; aapko current affairs aur static subjects (History, Polity, Geography) ke beech ek link banana hoga. Daily newspaper reading (The Hindu ya Indian Express) ko apni habit bana lein kyunki UPSC ab conceptual questions zyada puch raha hai.
Ek aur zaroori baat, CSAT paper ko halke mein na lein. Pichle kuch saalon mein dekha gaya hai ki kafi students GS Paper 1 mein toh achha score karte hain par CSAT qualify nahi kar paate. Isliye, Maths aur Reasoning ki practice regular intervals par karte rahein. Mock tests aur Previous Year Papers solve karna aapki speed aur accuracy badhane ke liye sabse best tarika hai.
The selection process for UPSC Civil Services 2026 is divided into three rigorous stages. Each stage is designed to test different aspects of a candidate's personality and intellectual ability.
The Prelims is a screening test consisting of two objective-type papers: General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). Each paper carries 200 marks. While the GS paper determines your merit for the Mains, the CSAT is qualifying in nature, requiring a minimum of 33% marks. Note that there is a negative marking of 1/3rd for every wrong answer. Candidates should check the detailed UPSC Syllabus to understand the weightage of topics.
Those who clear the Prelims cutoff enter the Mains stage. This is a written descriptive exam consisting of 9 papers. Two papers (Language and English) are qualifying, while the marks of the remaining 7 papers (Essay, 4 General Studies papers, and 2 Optional papers) are counted for the final merit. This stage tests your depth of knowledge and analytical skills. You must be very selective while choosing your Optional Subject as it carries 500 marks in total.
The final stage is the Interview or Personality Test, conducted at the UPSC Bhawan in New Delhi. It carries 275 marks. The board assesses the candidate's mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, and overall suitability for a career in public administration. The final ranking is based on the combined marks of the Mains and the Interview.
Candidates must hold a graduate degree from any recognized university in India. Even students in their final year of graduation can apply for the Prelims, provided they can produce proof of passing the degree exam at the time of the Mains application.
The general age bracket is 21 to 32 years. However, the government provides significant relaxations for reserved categories:
OBC: Up to 35 years (3 years relaxation)
SC/ST: Up to 37 years (5 years relaxation)
PwBD: Up to 42 years (10 years relaxation)
Ex-Servicemen: As per government norms
Please note that candidates who have already been appointed to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Indian Foreign Service (IFS) based on previous exams and continue to be members of those services are NOT eligible to appear for the UPSC Civil Services 2026 exam.
The UPSC syllabus is vast, but focusing on high-weightage areas can streamline your preparation. Below is a breakdown of the core subjects for Prelims GS Paper 1:
